Equipping a new house, whether to live in or to rent, always implies a practical question: where to buy appliances?

In Portugal there are many options — well-known physical stores, online stores and marketplaces with dozens of different sellers. Not all of them offer the same level of trust and after-sales support.

This article brings together what is important to know before buying: where to find reference brands, how guarantees work in Portugal and how CW can help simplify the whole process.

Large Appliances: Often Already Come With the House

Before you go shopping, it’s worth checking what’s already included in the property.

In Portugal, it is common for new or refurbished apartments to come equipped with large kitchen appliances — hob, oven, extractor fan and, sometimes, built-in refrigerator and dishwasher.

This is especially common in properties sold as “ready-to-move-in” or in new developments, where the kitchen is delivered already equipped.

Therefore, the first step is always to check what is in the contract or in the property file — and only then decide what you still need to buy.

The Great Appliance Stores in Portugal

For those who need to buy, Portugal has several consolidated chains, with physical stores spread across the country and face-to-face customer support:

  • Worten: the largest Portuguese electronics and home appliances chain, with physical stores in practically every city and an online store.
  • FNAC: present in the main shopping centres, with a section dedicated to household appliances as well as electronics and technology.
  • Rádio Popular: national network with decades of history in Portugal, strong in both large and small household appliances, with regular promotions.
  • Darty (formerly MediaMarkt): in 2023, the French group Fnac Darty bought MediaMarkt’s operation in Portugal, and since October 2025 the stores have been renamed Darty, maintaining the same network of physical stores and the online store.
  • El Corte Inglés: in Lisbon, it has an appliances section that includes more premium brands, such as Smeg.

All have a physical store, which makes it much easier if you need to return, exchange or activate the warranty.

Online Stores and Marketplaces: What You Need to Know

In addition to the large chains, there are marketplace platforms, where several different sellers advertise their products through a larger website.

This does not necessarily mean that the product is of poorer quality or less reliable.

What changes is the after-sales support: if you need to make a complaint, ask for an exchange or activate the warranty, the process can be slower and more difficult to solve when the seller does not have a physical store in Portugal or an easily accessible customer support team.

Therefore, for appliances — especially those of higher value, such as refrigerators, washing machines or ovens — our recommendation is to prioritize companies with a physical store in Portugal. It is simpler to solve any problem in person, and customer support is usually faster.

Take Advantage of Promotions, Carefully

Large stores have promotion campaigns throughout the year — sales, Black Friday, special dates — which can represent significant savings on the purchase of appliances.

It is worth comparing prices between stores before deciding, as the same brand and model may be on sale at different times in each one.

The important thing is to always confirm that you are buying directly from the store or from an identified and reputable seller — and not just for the lowest price.

Warranties: What You Need to Know Before You Buy

In Portugal, all new products are entitled to a legal warranty of 3 years from the date of delivery (since January 2022). During this period, if the appliance is defective, you are entitled to request a repair, replacement, price reduction or refund — without transport, labor or material costs.

In addition to the legal warranty, some stores offer a commercial or extended warranty, usually paid. It’s only really worth it if it covers more things or lasts longer than the legal warranty, so it’s worth reading the conditions carefully before accepting.

If you buy online, you are also entitled to 14 days to return the product without the need for justification.

And, once again, having the guarantee is one thing — being able to use it without complications is another. This is where buying in stores with a physical presence in Portugal usually makes a difference.

Reference Brands for Small Appliances

For those looking for small appliances with a more careful design — toasters, coffee machines, blenders — brands like Smeg are a reference, especially for the aesthetics that integrate well into more careful interior projects.

Smeg has its own store in Lisbon and also sells through large stores, such as Worten, FNAC and El Corte Inglés — so you can choose to buy directly from the brand or through a trusted retailer, depending on what is more practical.

The same reasoning applies to other reference brands: always check if you buy through the brand’s official website or an authorized reseller, especially on marketplace platforms.

For small kitchen appliances, it is also worth visiting Home & Cook, which represents brands such as Krups, Moulinex, Rowenta and Tefal in Portugal, with physical stores (for example in outlets such as Freeport and Vila do Conde) and online store.

How The CW Can Help

Imagine having to receive each purchase separately — one day the cellar arrives, the next day the coffee machine, then the small kitchen appliances — and having to check, unpack and correctly dispose of each package. In Portugal, the incorrect disposal of garbage and packaging can lead to fines that, depending on the municipality and the severity of the infraction, can range from €75 to €5,000.

At CW, we take care of all this for you: we coordinate purchases in different stores, receive each order, check, unpack and ensure that the packages are disposed of correctly.

In the end, the customer receives all the items already sanitized and placed exactly in the place previously designed for them in the project — without worrying about deliveries, unpacking or construction waste.

This monitoring is part of our turnkey project — it is already included in the service, from the beginning to the end of the work.

Buy with Confidence

Equipping a house in Portugal doesn’t have to be complicated.

With the right stores, attention to warranties and some care when comparing prices and sellers, it is possible to buy with confidence — whether for the large kitchen appliances or for the small details of everyday life.
