For those who still don’t know Portugal, one of the first questions when equipping a house is usually: after all, where do you buy furniture here?

The answer depends on the budget and style you are looking for. In Portugal there are stores for all tastes and all budgets — from simple and functional solutions to design pieces with an international signature.

In this article we have organized the main options into three groups, and we also explain why, in practice, the best house rarely comes from a single store.

More Affordable Stores: Simple, Functional and Practical

For basic furniture, with a good price and fast delivery, there are several well-known options in Portugal:

  • IKEA: the largest European reference in affordable furniture and simple assembly.
  • JYSK: Danish chain in strong expansion in Portugal, focused on bedroom, living room and organization.
  • Conforama: generalist furniture and mattress store, with competitive prices and frequent promotions.
  • Beliani: online store with a very wide catalog and frequent discounts, a good option for those who want to compare prices without leaving home.

They are great options for quickly solving everyday pieces — but, on their own, they tend to make the house look like anyone else who has bought from the same catalog.

Mid-Range Stores: More Personality, Yet Good Value for Money

One step above, there are stores with more elaborate pieces in terms of design, without reaching the prices of an author store:

  • Zara Home: strong in textiles, lighting and decorative pieces, with some support furniture.
  • Kave Home: design brand with contemporary style pieces, between affordable and medium-high.
  • Maisons du Monde: known for the “Parisian chic” style in furniture and decoration.
  • Antarte: Portuguese brand known for its personalized sofas and furniture, with a good balance between quality and price.
  • El Corte Inglés: large department store with a mid-range furniture and decoration section.
  • Laskasas: Portuguese furniture brand with functional and contemporary pieces.

These stores help to give character to a house without skyrocketing the budget — but the same warning applies: the more pieces from the same collection, the more the house looks like the brand’s catalog.

High-End Stores: Signature Pieces and International Design

At the top, there are stores and brands that work with international design, quality national production and pieces designed to last generations:

  • Paris:Sete: historical reference in Portugal, it represents international brands such as Hay, Vitra and B&B Italia, and even offers project support to its clients.
  • BoConcept: contemporary Scandinavian design furniture, with high-end finishes.
  • QuartoSala: concept store with exclusive Italian, Austrian and Scandinavian brands.

This is where an important detail lies: even these reference stores, when they offer design, tend to design around what they sell. And the result, taken to the extreme, is a house that looks like the store’s showroom — which is rarely what anyone really wants to live in.

How the House Can Look Without a Careful Look

Buying from several different stores, without a project that ties everything together, has a risk opposite to that of the showroom — but equally common.

Each piece, in isolation, can be beautiful and have been well chosen. But together, without a look that thinks about the whole, the result is usually a house where nothing talks to each other: a sofa disproportionate to the size of the room, colors that compete instead of complementing each other, styles that have no relationship from one room to the next.

It’s the difference between a house that looks “piecemeal piece, piece by piece” and a house that looks like it was thought of as a whole—even when the budget and the stores used are exactly the same in both cases.

This is exactly where the work of an interior architecture office comes in — thinking about the whole before any purchase.

What Stores Don’t Do for You

Whatever the store, there’s a clear limit to what it commits to delivering: the store is responsible for its furniture—and only for it.

This means that, normally, they do not open a hole in the wall to hang a picture they bought elsewhere, they do not assemble the whole house, only the furniture they sold, and much less leave the house ready to live in.

No furniture store delivers a house with the paintings hanging on the right walls, the sheets placed on the bed, the appliances installed on the countertops, the dishes bought and stored, or a beer in the fridge and a wine waiting in the cellar.

Our Turnkey Project

At CW, the turnkey project means just that: we deliver the house ready to live in, not just the assembled furniture.

We coordinate purchases in different stores, take care of the delivery, assembly and installation of everything — from the sofa to the picture on the right wall — and prepare the house for the moment the customer opens the door: bed made, dishes tidy, appliances ready to use, and even that detail of receiving with the first purchase made and the fruit basket on the countertop. 100% of the purchases we make are approved by the customer beforehand. The customer approves everything, from the design to the price of each item.

Mixing stores is not a contradiction — it is intelligence

A good interior design rarely comes from a single store. At CW, we mix furniture purchased in Portugal with pieces purchased in various stores in Europe — often at more competitive prices than those practiced here — and complement it with custom-made furniture, designed specifically for that space.

It’s that mix that makes every home unique, rather than a replica of a store’s showroom. And it’s also what allows you to balance style and budget: a stylish and practical home doesn’t have to be expensive — it needs to have every piece in the right place.

How The CW Can Help (and Help Save)

An interior architecture office knows the right stores for each type of piece — it knows where it is worth saving and where it is worth investing — and has access to stores and suppliers, in Portugal and the rest of Europe, that are often not easy to find on your own.

More than that: we take over all the management of the process — purchases in different stores, storage until the right date, exchanges when something doesn’t fit or arrives damaged, delivery and assembly — so that the customer doesn’t have to manage dozens of orders, different deadlines and carriers.

The result is usually a more financially balanced project than buying everything in isolation in a single store and, at the same time, a house with much more personality and coherence than buying without an overall look at the needs and tastes of each client.
